Résumé anglais J.-P. Chauveau—~~Exchanges in Pre-Colonial Baule.~~ The Baule economy was dominated by inter-personal relation-ships in conformity with the so-called 'general principles of Akan States' which excluded the formation of a merchant class. While external exchanges played an important part in the genesis of internai changes of Baule society, there were definite attempts to neutralize this influence, e.g. through the institution of 'filtering' transit markets on the periphery of the country. Nevertheless, in spite of the segmentary structure of the society and of its self-sufficient economy, there is some evidence of drastic changes in the ofring at the time of colonial penetration.
