La question patrimoniale et les enjeux de l'identité locale ont pris un rôle croissant dans les politiques symboliques et les politiques d'image des villes. L'objet de cet article est de rendre compte des usages sociaux de la mémoire et du patrimoine dans les projets urbains actuels. Partant d'une dynamique de production et de valorisation d'une image globale de la localité (Appaduraï, 2005) dans les trois villes de Saint-Étienne, Nantes et Clermont-Ferrand, nous comprenons que les choix opérés par les professionnels de la ville dans les références et les mémoires urbaines participent d'un travail d'imagination autour de la spécificité locale qui détermine grandement l'enjeu d'une visibilité et d'une reconnaissance globale. Heritage and Urban Regeneration Project : Producing and Valorising the Locality in Saint-Étienne, Nantes and Clermont-Ferrand (France)The issues about heritage and local identity have grown into an important component of the policies fabricating the image and symbols of the city. The aim of this article is to analyse those social uses of memory and heritage acting on contemporary urban regeneration projects. Studying the dynamics of a production and valorization of the locality (Appaduraï, 2005) in the french cities of Saint-Etienne, Nantes and Clermont-Ferrand, the article explains that the choices made by city planners in terms of urban references and collective memories play an important part in the work of the imagination about the particularities of the locality.
