Résumé anglais The dynamics of a twofold heritage. University-business relations in Strasbourg The history of Strasbourg University shows that the relationship between university research and business has a long tradition. It started with the installation of the very modern Kayser Wilhelm Universitàt by the Germans in 1872, in which the alliance with industry was organized from Berlin. It continued after Alsace was handed back to France in 1918. At that time the initiative came from local business and university authorities intent on promoting an university inspired by German efficiency. After the Second World War, which had forced Strasbourg University to retrench at Clermont-Ferrand, ties with business were momentarily relaxed because Strasbourg's scientists were heavily involved in nuclear research. In the 1980s contacts were resumed at the instigation of the academic community in the context of the issues raised by the relationship between science and technological innovation. New structures were set in place to valorize research findings, facilitate technology-transfer and promote management training. The Strasbourg experience shows that, contrary to conventional wisdom, the university has rarely taken refuge in an ivory tower. In that it shares in the practices of other provincial universities. Its originality is that it was conceived as a showcase on the Rhine by both the Germans and the French.
