Résumé anglais The Washington Consensus Based primarily on bibliographical research this article aims to shed some light on the building of the Washington Consen sus This expression designates the orthodox economic poli cies deregulation privatization liberalization of exchange that international financial institutions impose on borrowers in exchange for their help Seeking to understand the mechanism of this construction which involves conversion from Keynesianism to the Washington Consensus the analysis follows the genesis of the two social spaces in which this translation occurs that of university economics and that of the IMF and World Bank In the first instance the authors stress the strategies mathe matical financial ideological or communications which enabled the theoreticians of the Chicago School to dominate the field of power In the second case they emphasize the relatively fragile posi tion of institutional financial experts in the space of financial power and North American politics and view this fragility as one of the reasons which has prevented the development of
