Résumé anglais Management strategies and worker resistance The present article studies the conditions in which some of the work shops at the Peugeot factory in Sochaux carried out their Japanese- style modernization Between 1989 and 1992 without interrupting production 000 workers in the archaic assembly shop where work was ultra-Taylorized were transferred to nearby shop called habillage-caisses in which the hierarchy was attempting to apply the new principles of participant management The job was still basically assembly work but the just in time production created new constraints In the beginning the coachwork workers were young go-getters who went along with the moderni zing logic Three years later the last workers old and demoralized knew that they were bound for the worst shop in the factory The study conducted over several-year period reveals the violence of the conflicts and in particular the symbolic struggles over the modernizing initiatives as well as the complexity and ambivalence of the employees strategies of resistance The article situates the analysis of the different attempts on the part of the management to reform the attitudes of an ageing work-force to launch new company culture etc. in the framework of broa der reflection on changes in the Peugeot factory and in the workers
