Les sociétés ne sauraient fonctionner ni se transformer sans les déplacements des êtres humains dans l'espace. Le monde urbain des sociétés industrialisées contemporaines en particulier exige une mobilité spatiale fluide et multiforme. Michel Bassand et Mairie-Claude Brulhardt préconisent un schéma général d'analyse réunissant les cinq conditions nécessaires à l'appréhension globale et à la compréhension de la mobilité spatiale : l'interdisciplinarité ; la reconnaissance de l'irréductibilité du niveau macro-social (société, espace...) et du niveau des acteurs ; l'examen sous l'angle des flux, des déterminants et des conséquences ; une conception systémique de la mobilité spatiale ; la prise en compte de l'interdépendance de la mobilité et de l'organisation spatiales. Spatial mobility: a fundamental social process.
Society could neither function nor evolve without people's movements in space.
