L'article explique pourquoi Georges Balandier exerça une immense influence sur les premières générations d'historiens de l'Afrique de langue française en opposant l'anthropologie dynamique à l'anthropologie structurale prônée par Claude Lévi-Strauss. Son ouvrage Anthropologie politique (1967) en fut l'expression théorique, alors qu'il l'avait déjà pratiquée dans plusieurs ouvrages historiques, notamment La vie quotidienne au Kongo du XVIe au XVIIe siècle (1965). This article emphasizes the importance of Georges Balandier in the early 1960s in helping give birth to an African History written by French historians, by proposing a “dynamic anthropology.” He opposed it to Claude Lévi-Strauss' structural anthropology, at a time when structuralism was at its apex, most notably in his Anthropologie politique (published in French in 1967 and in English in 1970). Beforehand, he was one of the very first French social scientist to write a historical study on Africa ( Daily Life in the Kingdom of the Kongo , published in French in 1965 and in English in 1968).
