Longtemps restée marginalisée, la vallée du Souss, malgré le stress climatique et son éloignement du pouvoir administratif central, est devenue le deuxième pôle économique du Maroc depuis un quart de siècle. Encadrée par des reliefs volumineux, le Haut-Atlas au nord et l'Anti-Atlas au sud, et dotée d'une plaine largement ouverte sur l'Atlantique, la vallée du Souss connaît le développement d'une agriculture sous serre grâce à l'exploitation des nappes phréatique. L'utilisation abusive de cette ressource fossile dans un espace aride où les précipitations sont très aléatoires, conjuguée au rythme accéléré de l'urbanisation, risquent de conduire cette vallée à un retour vers la marginalisation, malgré ses potentialités touristiques et halieutiques. Changes triggered by the over exploitation of water resources in an area bordering the desert : The Souss Valley, Morocco. Despite unfavourable climatic conditions and a remote location with regard to central administrative power, the Souss Valley, which had long been marginalized, has over the past 25 years become the second most important economic centre in Morocco. Surrounded by high mountains (the High Atlas in the North and the Anti-Atlas in the South) and with a wide plain opening to the Atlantic Ocean, the Souss valley has specialised in hothouse agricultural development based on the exploitation of ground water resources However, the abusive use of this fossil resource in an arid zone where precipitation is unreliable, together with an accelerated rate of urbanization, may result, once again, in the marginalization of the Souss Valley, despite its potential for the development of tourism and fishing.
