Résumé anglais This article, which adopts a socio-cultural approach to a sports micro- field, attempts to analyse the social structure of high-altitude mountain activities by identifying different ideal types among those participating in such activities. An extensive survey was designed that covered a one-year period, at a critical moment in the development of the sports activities studied, in the areas of Mont Blanc and the Aiguilles Rouges, massifs that are characterised by an exceptional diversity of activities and participants. In the sample (n = 1607), obtained from visitors to these sites, we were able to identify eight groups of participants, coming from a wide range of social backgrounds and including professionals and amateurs. Despite the considerable weight of outdoor sports participants, the major contrasts observed in the social system of sports were evident, as well as the classic oppositions between classes and subgroups, with a preponderance of intellectuals. The study provides a number of insights to improve our understanding of the field of high-altitude mountain sports activities and certain aspects of their development, with particular emphasis on the present and future influence of « free » climbing.
