Financial Markets with Search Frictions. This article is devoted to the study of search frictions in financial markets where agents invest in costly search activities to make financial transactions. Search frictions are important to explain the existence of financial relationships and to understand the functioning of over-the-counter markets. A synthetic model is developed to show how search theory can be applied to financial markets. The contributions of search theory to the analysis of the financial accelerator and of the liquidity of markets are discussed.
Are Inflation Targeting Central Bankers Inflation Nutters ? This article investigates whether the inflation targeting strategy implies in fact a higher degree of conservatism than other monetary policy regimes. To this end, we use an original indicator of Central Banks' conservatism, based on the Taylor Curve, as suggested by Levieuge and Lucotte [2013]. Estimations based on the propensity score matching method indicate that inflation targeters have a significantly higher relative preference for inflation stabilization than non-targeters. This questions the inflation targeting strategy in that the recent financial turmoil has shown that price stability is not a sufficient condition to ensure macroeconomic and financial stability.
Unconventional Monetary Policy and Asset Prices in Emerging Market Countries. The expansion of global liquidity, resulting from the unconventional monetary policies implemented by the major Central Banks over the past several years, has contributed to the debate on the cross-border impact of those measures. This paper examines the impact of global excess liquidity on asset prices for a set of eleven emerging market countries taking into account nonlinearity by using a panel threshold model. We find that, in period of high-risk appetite of international investors, global excess liquidity is a positive determinant of asset prices in those countries. However the link between the two variables disappears when investor risk aversion strengthens.
The Impact of Exchange Rate Regimes on Countries Production Structures : The European Case. Two approaches are used to analyze the impact of exchange rate variability on countries' specialization : Krugman [1991] underlines a positive effect of monetary integration on specialization while Ricci [1997] considers exchange rate variability as enhancing specialization. In line with these analyses, we conduct a panel analysis on the EU27 countries (1993-2008). The results give a mixed picture : the link between specialization and exchange rate regimes is found to be significant but its sign differs according to sectoral disaggregation. We suggest an explanation, conciliating the two challenging analyses, based on the role of prices and the difference between inter-industry and intraindustry specialization.
The Impact of Lehman Brothers' Bankruptcy on Credit Default Swaps of Dealers Banks. This paper investigates the dynamics of conditional correlations among the G14 dealer banks for the credit default swap (CDS) market. The purpose of the paper is to distinguish between “contagion” and “interdependence” during the global financial crisis, following the definition of Forbes and Rigobon [2002]. We identify the banks which were the most or the least affected by losses induced by the crisis and we draw some conclusions in terms of their vulnerability to financial shocks. We use an asymmetric dynamic conditional correlations model which takes into account the asymmetries in the transmission of shocks on the correlations (ADCC model) by Cappiello, Engle and Sheppard [2006]. Our results show firstly, that there was a dynamic correlation structure among the conditional pair correlations of the G14 dealer banks. Secondly, we find that all banks in our sample became highly contaminated due to Lehman Brothers' bankruptcy, denoted by a significant increase of their conditional correlations that lasted temporary. The results are in favor of “contagion” rather than “interdependence” hypothesis. On the whole, the banks which announced massively subprime writedowns and losses between 2007 and 2008 were more affected than the others. These results question about the Too-Interconnected-To-Fail, but also about interlocked positions as a factor of systemic risk.
