Organized in the context of the Brazilian agrarian form, a local meeting centered on the dramatization of a domestic conflict, allows the analysis of the way in which meetings are simultaneously a political technology and a ritual of government providing a formalized venue for interactions between bureaucratic logics and the logics of interpersonal relationships. The official definition of the domestic conflict, framed in terms in conformity with bureaucratic norms, collide with the practical arrangements and norms of local interpersonal relations. The management of the relationship between these two worlds relies on the mediation of the frontline bureaucrat. In the context of indirect administration, meetings generate a ritualized form of existence of the « community » as an essential, if largely fictitious, element of « participatory » government.
The article examines the consequences of State agents' attempts to inculcate particular practices, behaviors, and lifestyles in the inhabitants of a rural village in Mexico. By analyzing three case studies it shows that the power of symbolic imposition exercised by representatives of the State over the inhabitants of a village is strongly linked to the presence of structural conditions that are favorable to the reception of instructions. It thus relativizes the excessively unilateral vision of social change found in most analyses of Latin American indigenous policies.
Focused on an ethno-clinical consultation with a West African family, this article highlights the relevance of studying these sessions, in their meeting format, through the prism of an ethnography of politics from below. After showing that the performances given in these meetings lead to a construction of an omnipresent cultural “origin” that rapidly and pervasively frames the interaction, the article reveals the articulation of several felicitous conditions that may explain the session's performativity.
This article starts with the ethnography of an external work meeting between the agents of a Malagasy town and their foreign “partners.” In it we see a struggle between those who think that the legitimate scale for making decisions about the town's “development” is at the local level and those who believe it is the transnational level. Outside interference and resistance to interference observed here can be understood as results of individual and collective relationships of domination as well as behaviors that have been tested and negotiated over the course of professional and activist careers.

Ethiopian civil servants work in a highly politicized environment, where the single ruling party ensures their obedience through the recruitment system, evaluations and sanctions. But they react differently to this partisan control and adopt varying attitudes according to their resources and situations. By analyzing civil servants' everyday practices, simultaneously viewed through their relations with the population and the many international development program employees working in and with the administration, this article demonstrates the consequences of discipline on administrative practices.
Immigrant workers were deeply involved in strikes in the French automotive sector in the early 1980s, especially at Citroën and Talbot. They demanded respect of Muslim religious practices, a claim that would join a list of other labor union demands. Progressively a new interpretation of the conflicts circulated between the fields of industrialists, police, media, and politics, which placed Islam (then Islamism) as the essential key to understanding these labor disputes to the exclusion of other claims.

How should we interpret an essential interviewee's refusal to grant an interview? While researching activist filmmakers of the 1970s, I was unable to meet with the documentary filmmaker Chris Marker, who explained the reasons for his refusal in an e-mail. Following his death in 2012, his refusal seemed rife with meaning that I have interpreted and used to formulate two complementary hypotheses. The first is the refusal of stigma. Although he was a pioneer and key player in activist cinema, Chris Marker refused to be associated with the dogmatism that characterized this genre and always emphasized artistic autonomy. The second hypothesis is his obsession with secrets and enchantment. The activist film collective that he founded and ran gave him a degree of invisibility while nonetheless being the product of an extremely charismatic organizational principle.
