Among some twenty notebooks currently available, the catechism preserved in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek is a particularly interesting example. Both its material form (a single big sheet made of sisal fibers) and the history of its deciphering deserve attention. Starting with Boturini, the first collector, then with León y Gama, and purchased afterwards by Humboldt, this pictographic manuscript was also studied by Eduard Seler. This article addresses the uses of this catechetical tool in a new way, by contextualizing the commentaries that its study brought forth. It also raises new issues by comparing it with Nahuatl catechisms published in the 16th century.
The birth of a Creole's consciousness in America has often been dated to the seventeenth century. However, the study of sixteenth-century Franciscan sources in New Spain may allow us to refine this chronology. A treatise on rhetoric was published in Perugia in 1579 by Diego Valadés, a mestizo Franciscan and former procurator of his Order to the Roman Curia. It is a proof that from the beginning of their appearance in the middle of the intense social crisis of the 1570's, the Creole circles sought the support of the Holy See, outside the Castilian monarchy. This was an opportunity for Rome to recapture the American Churches that had escaped its power since the 1493 bulls, and offered to Creoles like Valadés a possibility to legitimate their position vis-à-vis the Crown, in the context of the enforcement of the decisions of the Council of Trent.
In this article the author studies the commitment of the laymen to evangelize the Peruvian indigenous people in the 16th and the 17th centuries, by way of their financial participation and charity. It shows that for the sixteenth-century encomenderos the practice of charity towards Indians contributed to establishing their adherence to Tridentine orthodoxy and to justifying their dominant status in the colonial society. The practice of the same kind of charity by a seventeenth-century merchant reveals that this way of social legitimation was still available and perpetuated, from the point of view of the Spanish laity, the religious distinction between Indians, considered as neophytes, and Spanish descendents, assimilated to catholic devouts.
In this article the author analyses the process of evangelization of the Tupinamba Indians on the Brazilian coast in the second half of the 16th century. It aims to show how the method of adaptation or accommodation was used by the Jesuits to evangelize the Indians considered as people "without faith, law and king". Although they denounced the absence of religion of these Indians, the missionaries defined a religious frontier in 16th century Brazil. Shamanism was then observed, described and sometimes imitated by the Jesuits, who were criticized, especially by the first bishop of Brazil. The article focuses on the figure of Francisco Pinto, a missionary in the northern frontiers of 17th century Brazil, on the limits of the colonial territory. Francisco Pinto was an ambivalent cross-border figure, who used his excellent knowledge of the Indian language and became a kind of shaman himself and ended murdered by hostile Indians. Jesuit Portuguese documents, as well as French Capuchin sources, provide the sources to analyze both Pinto's missionary methods and Indian logic at work in this interactive episode.
The article explores the historical "construction" of the Virgen del Carmen as the "patroness" of the victorious soldiers in the War of Independence and its subsequent identification as the patroness of the Nation. This political extension of her protection was the result of the ideological link between the Army and the new nation-state that emerged from the war. But for this very reason, the virgen remained as a military representation that prevented her to be projected as a collective and popular devotion when peace came.

At the beginning of the 1950's, five agencies of the United Nations (UN, WHO, ILO, WFP, Unesco) launched a far reaching program, called the Andean Indian Program (AIP) in Latin America. It was implemented until the 1960's. It involved various countries (first Bolivia and Peru, then up to seven Latin American countries) and comprised four sections: cultural, sanitary, economical and social issues. Its goal was to help Andean Indians, who had been living in extreme poverty for centuries, to reach economical, social and cultural "development". This far reaching program was confronted to political problems and contradictions and was characterized by some paternalistic and conservative elements. Nevertheless, it seems to have been quite popular among Indians. It testifies in any case that the UN agencies had a clear preoccupation for autochthonous people and had reflected upon the meaning of the notion of indigenous work. That program also shows to what extent there exists relations of cooperation as well as of competition between those various UN agencies.
In the 1960s, the Biennial of Sao Paulo, which was founded in 1951, enjoyed a real boom on the international art scene. It reflected the transformations of contemporary art, from postwar nonfigurative art to new forms of figuration in the 1960s (pop art in the USA, new realism in Europe, tropicalismo in Brazil). The artistic forum of São Paulo was the opportunity for France and West Germany to compete among the greatest nations, at a time when the School of Paris was losing momentum because of the expanding New York School and when, on the contrary, the German creativity was regaining the impetus that it had lost during the Nazi Regime. In the tense context of the Cold War, the relation between Brazil and France failed to be part of de Gaulle's “third way” whereas the Federal Republic and Brazil inaugurated a promising partnership in the commercial, technological and cultural fields.
    • Description ou prescription ?
This text presents an analysis of the processes of ethnic-racial classification and categorization of the population of Belize throughout 19th and 20th centuries, based on the censuses and the reports of the government. We are interested not so much in the data as such, as with the categories used for counting the population, seen as indicators of political instruments of construction of a colonial, then a national society. Whereas, at the 19th century, the censuses reflect the various modes of apprehension of the population (transition from slavery to freedom, assertion or negation of ethnic-racial diversity), the administrative reports are based on a demographic and spatial model that seem invariant and stereotyped, and used like a simple political management tool. At the 20th century, we analyze the long and difficult walk towards the independence (1982) and the changes introduced by the new State of Belize into one of the processes of construction of a national identity (categories and methodology of census).
Since the end of the dictatorship, there has been a redefinition of the relationships between the Chilean State and the indigenous peoples. A new political, legal and ideological framework has been implemented in order to deal with the so-called “indigenous problem” and multiculturalism has become the new buzzword of official discourses. In this essay, we shall focus on the political nature of this new national and nationalizing project called multiculturalism through the examination of the patrimonializing process of the indigenous cultures and past. Drawing on the critical anthropology of development and of the neoliberal State, we shall concentrate on the Council of National Monuments' new policy that contributes to the reimagining of the nation through the transformation of indigenous cultures into national patrimony and economic resource. We shall then draw some general conclusions regarding the nature of neoliberal multiculturalism and the shaping of what we call ethnogovernmentality.
