A History Museum Facing a Racial Question: the International Slavery Museum in Liverpool
Inaugurated in Liverpool in 2007, the International Slavery Museum deals with the history of slavery and its “legacies”. In a city which was the principal slave-trading port in Europe, this initiative forms part of a minorities policy aiming to provide the city's black population and beyond with a form of recognition. This paper retraces the genesis of the museum and analyses the frameworks employed in giving an account of slavery. It emphasises the decisive role played by a local context marked by acute racial conflict in the appropriation of the past and the uses made of it.
“Making the Neighbourhood, Making History.” World Heritage Registration and the Dictatorial Past in Valparaiso. Proceeding from an ethnographical study of Cerro Alegre in Valparaiso (Chile), and in the light of the recent registration of this neighbourhood as a World Heritage Site in virtue of its illustrious xixth century, the author examines the presence and imprint at the heart of social relations of an underground memory of the Pinochet dictatorship from 1973 to 1990. The paper highlights how becoming a World Heritage Site can trigger and exacerbate conflicts linked to the dictatorship period and which, re-emerging from the social underground to which they had been confined, are played out again on the neighbourhood council.
An Impossible Local Heritage: Nostradamus in Salon-de-Provence (1980-1999)Proceeding from the case of Michel de Nostradamus and Salon-de-Provence at the end of the XXth century, this paper examines the memorial, symbolic, and economic relations which an average-sized town maintains with a local figure whose stigmatising connotations are at variance with notions of modernity or tradition to which local heritage actors subscribe. The convergence or divergence between the local and the national or international forces become blurred behind an interlacing of manœuvres: rehabilitation combining reinvention and effacement, borrowed elements and reappropriations, hesitant refusals and re-routings. The paper looks at one museum in particular, as well as at tourism, cultural and neighbourhood associations, the press and annual historical re-enactments.
The Site of the “Battle of 732”. Ethnography of an Historical Account : Between Colonial Legacy and National Reconfiguration. This paper deals with the manner of negotiating the relation to its colonial past of France in the Maghreb, concentrating on a key episode in the national historical account, the battle held to have taken place at Poitiers in 732. The creation, near Châtellerault, of a memorial site for that battle, and the annual commemoration which takes place there, constitute the substance of this paper, unfolding in three phases: firstly, an archeology of the genesis of the “Site of 732” situated in the context of the years from 1960 to 1970; secondly, an analysis of the contents of the site as seen through the typology of the discourses constructing the museum project; finally, clearly setting out the social issues involved in memorialisation, through observation and using the survey carried out on visitors to the site.
Quantifying Intimacy. The “Overcrowded Housing” Category : Between Statistics and Law (1936-1962)How did housing statistics pass from descriptions of housing estates in 1936 to being a measure of intimacy for residents in 1962 ? By retracing the genealogy of the “overcrowded housing” category, this paper seeks to demonstrate that the quantification of intimacy arose from the importation of juridical norms which, set against census findings, allowed for the establishment of an equivalence of tenant realities hitherto thought to be incomparable.
      What Dialoguing Means
This paper examines the recent genesis of the professional branch of sport which emerged in the 1990s and was formalised with the adoption of the collective sport convention in 2005, thus becoming a participant in what is commonly understood as social dialogue. Analysis of this empirical case demonstrates how power relations and alliance building take form in practice at the level of a professional branch among the various interlocutors involved in the process.

Socialisation, Field Theory, and Psychoanalysis. How Far Can the Unity of the Human Sciences Be Pushed? In his work Plural World, the sociologist Bernard Lahire argues convincingly and originally for the theoretical unity of the human and social sciences, offering, to this end, his own theory of practice: “dispositions + context = practices.” As this critical note demonstrates, such a theory not only rests upon a profoundly dichotomous reasoning but raises a number of difficulties in view of the requisites of the field theory and of psychoanalysis.
