This article centers upon an analysis of the conceptions of subjectivity theorized by Friedrich Nietzsche and Gloria Anzaldúa. Beyond the basic premise of a comparative method, the approach proposed here consists in elucidating the critical strategies through which Anzaldúa appropriates certain key elements of the Nietzschean vision of a “nomadic” subject—the sovereign Self emancipated from the burdens of judgment and metaphysical values—even while she supersedes the limits and contradictions of the Nietzschean subject through an Aufhebung of significant philosophical relevance. Indeed, it is the latter critical movement that allows Anzaldúa to conceptualize her own “future” nomadic subject: The “new mestiza,” a transnational citizen emancipated from the limitative values of prejudice and exclusive thought—a radical version of Nietzsche's emancipated Self. As a supreme embodiment of the space that represents the locus of her genesis and the field of actualization of her thought (the Frontera), the new mestiza represents the site of all possibilities, the promise of a humanity at last freed of all limitative borders—physical, geopolitical, cultural, and symbolic.

Although drawing its definition from two contradictory visions of the world (by western standards), magic realism has still become a major narrative mode in the West, expanding far beyond the confines of its favorite literary realm : Latin America. After briefly reviewing the history of its birth, this contribution analyzes the magic realist dimension in three African American novels so as to gauge its actual import. Not only does this mode open up consciousness to a much more comprehensive view of reality, operating what Wendy B. Faris calls a “remystification of narrative”, it also calls for a new definition of the frontier, a space of conjunction rather than opposition between the natural and supernatural, self and other. A privileged literary technique for achieving reconciliation, it enables African Americans to reappropriate their history and dual cultural identity.
Nicole Campillo is a Mexican by birth barrister who lives and works in the North-American town of El Paso. She was the daugther of migrant workers and, during her childhood years, she helped her mother to get the cotton crops in. At the time of the story, she has undertaken to defend the case of a young Mazahua who has been a victim of sexual harassment from the son of a North-American family with whom Nicole's husband has business relationship. The story is significant for a double reason : the recourse to fiction is used in order to tackle the social problems of the frontier and, at the same time, to show how the very same frontier operates as a dividing line in personal constructs.
Marginal area of the Hispanic colonization, the Río de la Plata did not follow the general scheme of the Conquest, with an Indian Frontier beyond which the Natives remained free and with effective control of their territory. The History of this region is focused most of the time on interethnic conflicts between Indians and Whites. Yet, this imprecise military borderline established by the Spaniards was in fact a space of continuous contact and exchanges between cultures that were at the same time antagonistic and interdependent. The Amerindians had always travelled throughout those territories looking for natural resources, for social or trading purposes and the process went on with a necessary adaptation to the new circumstances generated by the arrival of the white man. But this Frontier life will end up suddenly with the military campaigns of the Conquest of the Desert at the end of the 19th century.
On September the 28th 2008, the New Constitution was approved by the Ecuadorians by way of referendum. Following the example of Venezuela and Bolivia, Ecuador has carried out an overhaul of its institutions. Therefore, among the most innovative aspects of the Fundamental Chart, the recognition of the plurinationality of the State has to be emphasized. The purpose of this article is to see how the political project of Ecuador's President Rafael Correa becomes integrated into a global reflection on social, economic and cultural rights of the autochthonous peoples which has been carried out in Latin-America for about twenty years. The constitutionalisation of those rights by the Latin-American governments – and particularly in Ecuador – indicates a will to go deeper in the democratic process; at the same time, a questioning is raised over the concept of the search of identity and integration in both dimensions: national and transnational. The re-emerging notion of latin-american citizenship laid down in the Constitution, by the cumulative effect of the different spaces of social, politic, cultural and economic integration is changingcompletely the traditional schemes about frontier/territories/identity.
This work investigates the trajectory of the Tropicalist movement, an aesthetic current which is born at the end of the sixties in Brazil. Its creative force is examined by emphasizing the process of critical assimilation of elements originating from different cultural sources. In Brazilian culture, Tropicalism is the only artistic movement which, having chosen to combine a reflection on the reality of the country and a sophisticated language, has simultaneously succeeded in getting an enormous popular audience. The musical expression of the Tropicalist movement will be particularly considered in relation with its inscription within the continuity of previous experimental vanguards. While keeping some similarities with Modernism and Concrete Poetry movements, and affinities with the Cinema Novo, the Tropicalist movement is obviously characterized by peculiarities that will be discussed in this work.

Notwithstanding being one of the top-selling books on the 1968 student movement in Mexico and the massacre in the Tlatelolco Square, there are still no known specific analysis of the photos included in Elena Poniatowska's La noche de Tlatelolco. This article analyzes the images incorporated in this author's book. The present text proposes to employ principles of photographic history in order to approach the images as a photo essay and poses important questions with regard to our interpretation of this section of Poniatowska's publication : both as an independent unit and as a composed set of “ text and image ”. This study concludes by considering the changes that have occurred within this photographic essay with its translation into English and asks how these modifications can affect the way in which the text is read and the projection it gives of itself.
This paper addresses some evocations and representations of memory of the Argentinean dictatorship through post-dictatorial artistic photography. Two groups of works are analysed hereto, all produced in Argentina from 1983 to our days. The first group includes underground productions that recur on the topics of memory of repression and forced disappearance, while exploring the urban with astounded gaze, highlighting the traces left on the city by a painful past. The second group examines photographic productions that have, as a starting point, family pictures of missing people (desaparecidos). The new reconstructed family photographs are achieved by the intervention and remaking through collage, montage and staged environments that evoke and imitate the past.
Government repression against the 1968 Mexican student movement gave rise to a reaction of intellectuals and writers who started to fight against the burden of silence and institutionalized violence so as to inscribe in the Mexican historical memory traces of this movement and of the youth whose protest was repressed by bullets. In 1970, Octavio Paz analyzed the official system of repression ; in 1971, Elena Poniatowska collected photos of the victims, as well as the voices of those who must not be forgotten ; in 1999, Carlos Fuentes dedicated a whole chapter to this event in his narrative of the fictional life of Laura Díaz, a character who symbolizes the memory of the Mexican twentieth century and takes pictures of the Tlatelolco events. From the essay to the testimony and to the novel, how does the Tlatelolco tragedy take place in the memory of the Mexicans ?
Many Argentine authors have written novels about the military period that took place in that country between 1976 and 1983. In this work we have chosen the theme about disappeared people and kidnapped children. We compare this period with perverse proceedings committed during the Nazi Holocaust. Literature can build the memory with its language. We have chosen : A veinte años, Luz (1998) by E. Osorio, Tumba de Jaguares (2005) by A. Gorodischer, Purgatorio (2008) by T. Eloy Martínez, El secreto y las voces (2002) by C. Gamerro, Dos veces junio (2002) by M. Kohan, y Los Topos (2008) by F. Bruzzone. These pieces of literature build their memory of dictatorship with its own language and they use different approaches to express their fictions, like realism, the fantasy, polyphonies, and parody. Our reading is a way to remember the absence and the oblivion by the memory of the past looking forward to the future.
The last Argentinian dictatorship (1976 - 1983) and the years of violence which preceded it have been the subject of numerous interpretations and testimonies and if need be, fiction. Several years after the return to democracy, wheareas the wounds are far from having healed, many novels are being published which are coming back to that period, and with time having passed, embark on new paths to describe, question and reconstruct the dictatorship years. Among them, El fin de la Historia by Liliana Heker and Sara Rosenberg's first novel : Un hilo rojo, constitute two novelistic answers to the painful questions raised by dictatorship as regards commitment, compromise, responsibility, guilt, absence. Those novels are indirect testimonies about two missing people - through the memories of a missing person's friend in Heker's novel on the one hand and on the other hand, through the search carried out by another missing person's childhood friend so as to make a documentary, in Rosenberg's novel. Our aim here is to analyze the narrative strategies used by the two novelists to give back the two missing people some kind of existence and somehow build up a kind of memory, but memory for whom? For what?

Julio Cortázar's encounter with the Cuban Revolution's witnesses and testimonials leads him, in 1963, for the first time, towards the question of memory. Having been committed to causes of cultural politics since his youth, the Argentinian writer starts to develop, from that moment on, his own ideas on the role of literature within the memory of revolution, and puts them into practice through the story « Reunión ».The comparison of this text with its hypotext La sierra y el llano, already frequently discussed, regularly brings up two narratological points which deserve closer attention : First, why would one want to rewrite testimony in a non-authentic, fictional mode ? Secondly, why compete with the aesthetics of testimony brought forward by the Cubans themselves in La sierra y el llano ? The following article will try to explain Cortázar's choices through an examination of « Reunión » on the backdrop of several of the author's essays, and by means of the concepts of « immersion » (seen as the narrative « form » of political commitment) and of « figurae » of memory (which take the place of historical documents).
Ricardo Piglia in his essay « Memory and tradition » does a lucid analysis of the literary tradition in relation to the representation of the memory (impersonal, fragmented, done of appointments), the conscience of not having history, the condition of the exile, and the cultural identity of Argentina. This text will be the beginning – with other one, « Novel and conspiracy » – to do a cross reading (looking at Roberto Arlt), spatial (the margins of Buenos Aires), and conspired (how the power function in the political Argentine panorama of the second half of the xxth century) of one of his stories « Mi amigo ». This story will be used as example to illustrate the way in which certain Argentine literature perceives the conspiracy in relation to the class, the economy and the power, and it makes it visible.
Masliah, prolific polygraph (lyricist, short-story writer, novelist, playwright…) has often been labeled a humorist, heir to a tradition which ranges from Lewis Carroll to Woody Allen, not to mention Alfred Jarry, Ionesco, the Marx Brothers, the Oulipo, etc. In his books, the central character is language, which he plays with and subverts constantly. But there is also another element he systematically subverts : the pair forgetfulness/memory. Both Masliah's characters and the narrative or poetical voices are often subjected disturbances and alterations in memory. Besides producing humor and generating mechanisms of textual production, Masliah's elaboration on forgetfulness and memory points to the complex relationship between Uruguayans and the recent memories on the military dictatorship.
