Translating, as crossing, is in the thik of history of relationship between Latin America and Europe, as a show-down of languages and cultures. Colonial period shows crossing and unequal exchanges between Spanish colonizers and Amerindian colonized people, On the contrary, Independence period made New World Hispanic speakers –who turned their back on aboriginal cultures– dependent, not yet on metropolis, but on Europe, specially on French language and culture, and on Paris. Later, during XXth century, Amerindian expressions, at once honored back by Indigenist authors, were ignored by « boom » authors, who, as worldwide winners, like in former Golden Age, made back Spanish a source language. More recently, Postmodernity literatures, breaking codes from boundaries, use multiform mixtures, while minorities express their will of survival in their own languages, and more or less translate it to Spanish, for reaching some notoriety beyond their original communities.
The motto chosen by the Spanish Real Academy (Real Academia Española, RAE) since 1715, « limpia, fija y da splendor », unequivocally shows what has been a long term concern for the last three centuries: set the standard and promote a given language. Having long favoured the cultivated Spanish model from the Northern and Central Peninsula —at the expense of the Southern peninsular practices and especially the American ones—, the RAE has chosen since 1999 to implement a real ideological watershed by engaging in collective work with the other 21 academies of the Spanish language in order to promote a « polycentric norm », as part of a « panhispanic language policy ». Even if the intention seems laudable, what about the achievement of this goal? Can the latest publications, in particular the imposing Nueva Gramática de la Lengua Española [NGLE], be read as the implementation of the rhetoric that the RAE keeps hammering in its prologues? After presenting the panhispanic discourse by situating it in a broader context, we will set it against the reality of grammatical analyzes in the NGLE by focusing on two particularly significant phenomena, where the gap between American and European practices slightly widens: the « sequence of tenses » and the « compound tenses », with the particular example of the pluperfect.
This paper looks at the conception of death of the Ancient Peruvians which introduced no moral stake. On this area, the Catholic preaching which stressed alternative Heaven/Hell, illustrated in the wall fresco of the church of Andahuaylillas, but which especially put the emphasis on Hell, caused big confusion which the autochthonous popular tales dramatize the character of the condenado, populations could not include in its totality. The undead who allows to solve contradictions because he purges in this world the transgressions which he made during his existence.
The decline of the spanish colonial empire on the American continent chronologically overlapped with the passage towards a new century. During this transition period, the press –already strengthened as a means of information and entertainment – retrospectively conveyed and interpreted the stereotypes that had been generated throughout four centuries of hispanic hold dominion over the new continent. The late 19th century drawings, graphics and satirical cartoons became the mediums for a rich and varied iconography which conjured up the idealized evocations of an exotic world, the shock of different cultures and the outcome of the colonisation altogether. Nowadays, this large pictural production allows us to reach to a relecture of the past events by diciphering all the coded attributes, symbols and metaphors displayed in those illustrations.
Through three paintings from the Franco-Peruvian painter, Herman Braun-Vega (Lima, 1933), the present article aims to show the cultural mixture, evoked by the artist, considering the established relation between the great masters of European painting ̶ Velázquez, Picasso and Matisse – and the different elements of Peruvian popular culture. The three pieces of art were painted over different periods of the artist's career, but by using a similar technique. Our critical reflection is divided in two parts. On the one hand, we will pay special attention to the dialogue with the past, by means of the citation process of a piece of artwork and the integration of elements from Peruvian history and culture; on the other hand, considering an intertextual focus, we will discuss the notion of ‘mixture' in the Peruvian artistic imaginary, as well as its use as tool for understanding social phenomena from a universal perspective.
In many ways, director Arturo Ripstein can be considered a passeur. As postmodern artist, he has succeded in revisiting the Mexican film tradition, reinventing new versions of great classics, or subverting the codes of melodrama, a genre that has achieved national and international recognition during the Golden Age period. His movies often act as bridges between past and present, and enable to evaluate the evolution of filmic, cultural, and social representations. Ripstein is also a passeur in the sense that it is used by Serge Gruzinski, since he can be considered an “intermediary” artist, who combines in his films the many influences he has received, coming from Judeo-Christian, Mexican (contemporary and precolombian), European, or Anglo-Saxon culture. All those aspects are present in La perdición de los hombres, a movie which has not stimulated public nor academic interest, and that we want to highlight.
The falling sky, published in 2010, is the testimony of David Kopenawa, shaman yanomami and an important figure in the fight of indigenous rights at Brazil. Among the aspects of Kopenawa's narration I want to highlight the details of his travels toward Londres, Paris and New York. For me the goal of this travelling is the defense of place. Kopenawa travels with the resolution of denounce and criticize State politics and capitalist economy, which provokes deaths of Yanomamis people and the damage of his Earth. According with this point I argue that Kopenawa's travel is not only physical mobility but also epistemological and ontological. Travelling is a passage by which Kopenawa introduces another conception of politic into globalized world. In this way this shaman shows us the creativity and power of indigenous agency. Therefore, in this essay I will analyze the strategies and reasons of this mobility, according with politic and cosmological perspectives. In accordance with Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari (1987) I will define the concept of “movility”; whereas the work of Arturo Escobar (2004) help me to expose my definition of “defense of place”; finally, I will use Eduardo Viveiros de Castro's research with the purpose of explain my reading of yanomami cosmopolitic.
This work aims to reflect the alleyways in Belo Horizonte (Minas Gerais, Brazil) contemporaneous in light of the idea of « passage » present in Walter Benjamin. This will be done, in view of the aesthetic experiences seized with a health service that has access to alleyways and its characters. For this approach, we also need to invest in some concepts - such as territory, space and landscape - as well as the relationship between a possible « contemporaneous flâneur » and the context of drug use scenes.

The approaches of this hardly identifiable literary object called « fantastic » in Latin America are abundant, but they are not always totally convincing. From its European origins to its most recent manifestations, it is sometimes hard to find common points from one text to another, although one can feel the effect of the “uncanny”. This text aims at thinking of the conception of the “passage” as a tool able to helps us to analyse fantastic texts, from the patterns to some structural passages that constitute the framework of a short story. Our work proposes examples taken from a big corpus which is made up of old Peruvian authors, contemporary Mexican ones, and writers from the Rio de la Plata, to whom Rémi Le Marc'hadour dedicated a great part of his investigations.
In this article, we are interested in the notion of « rite of passage ». The rite of passage is an action which marks the symbolic passage towards a new status through a material mediation (with the body). In this definition we can read Bourdieu's condensed idea according to which the rite consists in “acting on the reality by acting on the representation of the reality”(Bourdieu, 1982: 58). In the studied works, the representation of the representation on the skin would therefore be a “mise en abyme” of the inscription on the paper. The writing, as an intervention on the reality, can be seen as a rite of passage because by acting on the representations it acts, in a way, on the social, discursive and personal reality, as appropriate. Thus, we will wonder what the rites of passage of the Argentine literature and their female authors mean in two works of the “Nueva Narrativa Argentina”, Romance de la negra rubia from Gabriela Cabezon Camara (Argentine author born in 1968 in Buenos Aires) and Matate amor from Ariana Harwicz (Argentine author born in 1978 in Buenos Aires). In thus two novels, the protagonists, that we can consider as the copies of their authors, impose symbolics physicals acts to themselves – the protagonist from Romance de la negra rubia sacrifies herself by the fire at the beginning of the novel, then she makes her lover's face transplanted on her; the one in Matate amor mutilates herself going through the glass window of her house- that we consider being rites of passage because they mark the passage of the status to another one and they register in their flesh the future “other”: the future of a double society which includes the margin for one, the mother future and the exile for the other. Al first we will study the structure of each novel in relation with the structure of the rite of passage, then we will tackle the different meaning of these passages, finally we will study the question of writing as a rite of passage towards a singular writing, towards a committed writing, towards a “Nueva narrative argentina”.
    • A representação arcádica do índio brasileiro : O Uraguai, de José Basílio da Gama - Carlos Versiani accès libre avec résumé en anglais
This article seeks to analyse the Jose Basílio da Gama's poem, O Uraguai, focusing on its aesthetic and social representations, related at the historical context of its production and circularity, in the confluences between arcadian school and the European illustration in the late eighteenth century. Specifically, the aim is to analyze the Amerindian representations present in the poem and the dialogues with other Brazilian poets of the same school, asking to what extent they would have created in the your poetry some specific tonalities, at the treatment they gave to Portuguese America. Analyze how the representations of the natives and the homeland land issue would be linked to the double sociocultural condition of poets : borns and raised in colonial Brazil and integrated at the illustrated and European neoclassical thought.
Investigating some works of Brazilian Romanticism, designated “pre-Modernist” Regionalism and Modernism, this paper dwells upon the forces concerning the intellectual debates from the turning of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th, aiming to prove how part of the arguments used either by artists or critics obliterated relevant gaps to comprehend the tensions arising from the modernization processes in progress. If, on one hand, 1922's Modernism might be responsible for important ruptures regarding certain creative freedom, on the other, it certainly did not spare the immediately former generation, brandishing tough critiques which, in fact, did not always held up by themselves. Beyond that, much of their position continued to influence upon the later critical discourses and consolidated apprehending manners, frequently in an aprioristic way, concerning the so-called regional or regionalist literature. We discuss, then, how Brazilian literature had modern art before reaching Modernism, even being this fact frequently ignored.
O Ateneu (1888), by Raul Pompéia, Chiquinho (1947), by Baltasar Lopes da Silva, and Manhã submersa (1954), by Vergílio Ferreira, despite the evident chronologic distance from the publishing of the former to that of the latter, are three examples of novels in which the formation of individuals, since childhood, is dramatized: whether in the conflict with a Brazilian boarding school during the reign of Peter II, whether in the account of lyceum times spent in colonial Cape Verde, whether in the confrontation with a Portuguese seminar of Salazar's time, there is in all three, via the memorialistic narration of Sérgio, Francisco and Antonio, a similar reaction against totalitarian and imposing discourses, as well as its standardization of individuals and masking of social differences. In this regard, the present article discusses the similarities among the abovementioned works, from a historical-comparative analytical point of view.
The publication of A morte and morte of Quincas Berro to d'Água (1961) by Jorge Amado confirms a turn in his narrative proposal, initiated three years previously with Gabriela Cravo e Canela (1958). The change is the use of innovative narrative strategies that rely on humor and critical distance, but without neglecting social criticism, a structuring element found in all of his literary production. In A morte ... Amado performs several intersections, both narrative and thematic, which allow the passage of a narrative voice to another, creating a polyphony which is in turn a trip to the speech of different social classes, particularly that of the media and the popular classes. The emergence of multiculturalism, in turn, allows the ambiguity of the passage from death to life and death again, through a history of the marginal who believe they have seen the rebirth of a deceased friend. These marginal, on the other hand, made a carnivalesque city tour of Bahía de Todos Santos, which allows them to break boundaries and realize crossings and voyages through urban and maritime geography.

This article deals with the topic of temporality among the Maroons of the Mawoni-Lawa valley, the river separating the Republic of Suriname from the French overseas territory of French Guiana. It aims at analysing from an empirical and objective perspective the way the Maroons think and experience time; it also aims at showing how peculiar the aspects of time interfere with their living strategies. The article will also explore to what extent this study of temporality may be a reference for researchers in literature and humanities to understand the way the Maroons consider the beyond, history, the experiences of the group, of clans, of families and individuals which compose it and their relation to their imagination?
Horacio Quiroga (1878-1937) Horacio Quiroga was one of the first Latin American authors to productively incorporate the influence of new technology into his writings. This article aims, on the one hand, to demonstrate how the inclusion of technology into his oeuvre reveals his traumatic experience with modernity in the first two decades of the twentieth century. On the other hand, it shows how this contact allows him to innovate and restructure the written text by incorporating visual aesthetics of technology.
