      The century of Leninism
For more than seventy years, the history of Marxism has been intimately linked to the history of Leninism. This article looks back at the genesis of « Marxism-Leninism » and its multiple declinations, mainly in the Soviet and French context, taking notably into account the multiple editorial networks having spread the works of Lenin for a long time. It especially questions the constitution of the Leninist corpus and its French use by multiple Marxist traditions during the 20th century, far from the most ideological approaches usually dealing with this issue.
« Look at the Germans ! » : Lenin's Roots in European Social Democracy
In the late nineteenth century, the German Social Democratic Party (SPD) pioneered a new type of party that combined innovative techniques of mass mobilization (the « permanent campaign », the « alternative culture », an extensive party press) with a well-defined revolutionary aim. Russian Social Democrats admired this model, but they realized they lacked an essential precondition : the political freedom that was necessary to carry out mass mobilization of a national scale. They themselves were forced to innovate while adapting the SPD model to inhospitable Russian conditions. Lenin's What is To be Done ? is less of a theoretical breakthrough than a summary of methods already found by empirical trial and error, coupled with Lenin's own practical suggestions toward achieving the next step, namely, a national party with a functioning central leadership
The Russian Roots of Lenin's Political Thought
This article outlines an alternative narrative to the one which contends that Lenin's political outlook was primarily influenced by Karl Kautsky and the proceedings of the 1891 Erfurt Congress of the German Social Democrats. It argues that Lenin's thought owed rather more to ideas evolved by a pre-existing socialist movement in Russia, and especially by the model of Marxism developed by Plekhanov during the 1880s. Plekhanov helped formulate an original response to uniquely Russian problems such as a complete lack of political liberty, a small industrial proletariat dwarfed by a much larger agrarian population, a recent history of rural serfdom and a widespread tradition of collective land-tenure among the small farmers. He linked all these features to a general doctrine of class struggle and the progression of society from capitalism towards socialism. We suggest that Lenin accepted the greater part of Plekhanov's arguments, even though Plekhanov himself was prepared to abandon them at a later stage.
From Russian Colonies to Black America... and Return. Lenin and Langston Hughes
Lenin's essays on national self-determination and anticolonial struggles are well known. Much less are his earlier remarks on the process of internal colonization of the Russian Empire's « free » borderlands. « Oppressed nations » are conspicuously absent in those writings, which are complemented with a cross analysis of the shared destiny of Russian serfs and American slaves. This urges us to look afresh at the later identification between the experience of Asian and African people subjected to the yoke of European imperialism and that of African Americans considering themselves as colonized from within. Finally, Langston Hughes's narrative of his travel to Soviet Central Asia in the early thirties offers a valuable perspective for reaxamining the emancipation of the Empire's « colored people » after 1917, and it limits.
Lenin at stake in the Seventies in Italy
What kind of Lenin's presence in the movements on the left of the PCI during the Italian “long May 68” ? The author analyses some alternative versions of Leninism, from the Operaismo till the Autonomy and the contemporary movements, by trying to clear, at every stage, a loyalty to Lenin, not as a pure emblem, but as an avant-gardism constantly renewed in its attempt to bind itself to the subjectivation of the new forms of production and to the transformations of work in the post-fordist era.
Deutscher, Lénine, Lukacs: reflections on Marxism in Hungary
Hungary, the only country having experienced a Socialist Republic just after the October Revolution, was also from the 1950s to the 1980s the place of a rich Marxist production. Halfway between testimony and historical analysis, this article notably looks back at the introduction of the work of Isaac Deutscher in Hungary and more generally at the rediscovery of Lenin and the first years of the Soviet regime. The author, who published a biography of Lenin, also offers a more global look at the period said of « real socialism » and the reasons for its breakdown.

Postcolonial Theory and the Specter of Marx : Vivek Chibber's Marxism
Vivek Chibber's Postcolonial Theory and the Specter of Capital is probably the most powerful critique of postcolonial studies from a Marxist point of view. On the occasion of its translation into French this paper questions the very idea of Marxism that supports this enterprise. After an introduction into Chibber's main ideas, this article engages with his view on the history of capitalism's development, abstract labour, « free » wage labour and the idea of « objective » interests. Hence, Marx and Marxist discourse seem to be more ambivalent than Chibber admits. And these ambivalences are legitimate starting points for postcolonial criticism despite Chibber's well-founded critique. This calls for a more adequate conception of the Marxian theoretical field and a correction of Marxist failures, i.e. an effort of self-criticism and pluralism.
The Concrete Materialism of Fernand Deligny : Toward a Thought of the Human Environment
In 1967, Fernand Deligny establishes, in the Cevennes, a network of living areas receiving autistic mute children. This very particular « attempt » elaborates a sort of materialism grounded on the concept of environment ( milieu) with important philosophical, clinical, anthropological and political implications. This articles aims to reconstitute Deligny's trajectory highlighting, on the one hand, the continuity between the network and his former attempts, and, on the other hand, the discontinuity of his positions regarding the collectivity and the communism
Genesis and Complexity : the Two Ontologies of Georg Lukács
This article aims at reading Georg Lukács' Ontology of Social Being as revealing difficulties in the project of elaborating a marxist ontology of society. It claims that Lukács explores two heterogenous ontological perspectives, which engage two distinct interpretations of the idea of an economic determination of social phenomena : a genetic perspective, worded in terms of « praxis », according to which social relaty is grounded on labor, and a processual one, worded in terms of « totality » according to which production is but one of society's spheres. The coexistence of these ontologies introduces a tension in Lukács' text, which he adresses at the level of an emancipation-oriented philosophy of history.
« The Misunderstandings of Hegemony » : Gramsci in the French Communist Party (1953-1983)Was the French Communist Party really interested in the work of Antonio Gramsci ? Our article presents several stages of the reception – with talks about the work of the Italian communist within the FCP stressing the unknown aspects, beyond the habitual caricature whereby Gramsci would have been purely and simply ignored or despised. Without having a central place in the long-time dominant « Marxism-Leninism », he was yet examined several times and notably used by the communist intellectuals in order to try and renovate Marxism.

Labor history, The Turning Point of « Global History » and Marxisms
In this interview, Marcel Van der Linden first looks back at his career path as an historian of labor movements, at his involvement in the far left until the direction of the International Institute of Social History. He notably presents the turning point of global history which enabled the recent renewal of the history of social movements, especially the labor solidarities. He also looks back at the Marxist interpretations of the Soviet regime to which he devoted a specific book. Finally, he offers, from his historian knowledge, a reading of the evolutions of contemporary social movements.
