Résumé Compliance, cohesion and development of the firms Every -growing firm is confronted tvith problems of internal cohesion. An increase in size and the lengthening of the hierarchical structure result in a reduction in compliance, which can lead to a complete loss of the firm's strategic coherence. In order to maintain sufficient cohesion the expanding firm must modify the control structure used by its major shareholders and the organisational relationships between the parent company and its subsidiaries. The article proposes a général model of thé création and development of groups, in which they are presented as a political construct. During their evolution there is a progressive transformation in management recruitment, behaviour patterns in the firm and the compliance expected of fellow managers. In this perspective the limits of the firm are viewed as the result of specific internal socio-political dysfunctions.
