Le mouvement de « renaissance littéraire catholique » qui voit le jour au début des années 1910 est la rencontre d'un groupe d'héritiers dont les transformations sociales
ont atteint les modes de reproduction et d'une institution, l'Église, qui, au lendemain de plusieurs crises qui ont profondément sapé son pouvoir, cherche tous les moyens de diffuser son
discours. Pour ces jeunes écrivains catholiques, mettre sa pensée et ses œuvres au service de
l'Église, c'est insérer son destin individuel dans le destin collectif de l'institution. Se réclamer
de l'Église leur permet de valoriser leurs dispositions religieuses dans le champ littéraire, et
donc de redonner à cette culture catholique, alors stigmatisée, une actualité. Cette revendication d'un « renouveau catholique » crée un noyau identitaire. En reliant l'art catholique à la
Tradition, cette « renaissance » permet de masquer l'invention d'une position, celle de

Social Decline and Identity Claim : the « Catholic Literary Revival » in the
First Half of the XXth Century.
The movement of «catholic literary revival» which appeared in France in the early
1910's is the result of the encounter between a group of inheritors whose reproduction is disturbed in the realm of major social changes, and of an institution, the
Catholic Church, which has lost part of its force as a consequence of numerous crisis
and which seeks new ways for spreading its ideology. For these young catholic writers, putting their thought and their works to serve on the Church means to insert
their own individual fate in the collective fate of the institution. This claim of a
«catholic revival» creates an identity frame. In fact, linking catholic art to Tradition
dissimulates the invention of a new literary position, that of the «Catholic writer», at
