Cartography and Quantitative Ecological Analysis of Religious Practice in
French Urban and Rural Areas.
Historical Context and Methodological Questions
In the seventies the author was one of the leaders of a collective research project
which undertook a quantitative ecological analysis of more than a thousand units in
France using the resources of the religious census made by the Catholic Church in
the middle of the twentieth century and the political, economic and demographic
data gathered in the same period. The purpose was to bring to light the contextual
determinants of religious practice in towns and rural areas. In this paper, the author
does not present the analysis undertaken at that time or their sociological conclusions which can be found in the texts published during and after the research.
Rather, he underlines the advantages and limits of cartography and makes some historical and methodological points. Throughout, he proposes a reflection on the relations between sociology and geography. Source : Éditeur (via Cairn.info) |
