Cet article propose de réfléchir, à partir d'un exemple très singulier, aux liens éventuels, et nullement évidents, entre périphérie et marginalité. Yopougon est en effet une commune périphérique de l'agglomération abidjanaise, mais bien que relativement isolée et assez mal reliée au reste de la métropole nous formulons l'hypothèse selon laquelle on ne peut guère l'analyser exclusivement en tant que marge. Yopougon avait en effet été conçue à la fin des années 1960 comme devant être la vitrine du savoir-faire urbain ivoirien en matière de gestion de la croissance urbaine. Son évolution depuis la crise économique de la fin des années 1970 a certes été marquée d'un arrêt de l'intervention de l'État et d'une paupérisation de sa population, mais elle fut en même temps l'occasion pour les habitants de ce quartier de clarifier leur place dans l'agglomération, voir de positionner Yopougon à d'autres échelles, son importance en tant que haut lieu culturel et politique étant aujourd'hui incontestée en Côte d'Ivoire. Yopougon, Yop city, Poy... periphery and urban model in the Ivory Coast A highly specific example is used to examine the possible links between periphery and marginality, which are far from obvious. Yopougon is a community on the periphery of the agglomeration of Abidjan. Although it is relatively isolated and quite poorly connected to the rest of the city the hypothesis is formulated that such an area cannot be analysed purely in terms of a margin. Yopougan had in fact been designed in the late 1960s as a showcase development of Ivory Coast savoir-faire in planning for urban growth. Development ion the life of the area since the economic crisis of the end of 1970s was certainly marked by a halt to State intervention and an impoverishment of its population, but was at the same time the opportunity for the people living in that area to clarify their place in the agglomeration, or even to position Yopougon at other scales.
