La mondialisation économique qui définit nos sociétés contemporaines comme globales a entraîné une rencontre de la traduction avec les technologies, de façon à les adapter aux diverses situations locales. Dénommée tout d'abord « localisation » dans certains milieux professionnels, cette rencontre s'est vite complexifiée en incluant d'abord l'industrie de l'informatique puis divers marchés (finances, médecine, loisirs, etc.), affectant manifestement des secteurs entiers de la communication et de notre organisation sociale. Cet article traite plusieurs des faits marquants de cette rencontre de l'Internet et des nouvelles technologies de l'information et de la communication avec la traduction, qui est devenue une composante majeure de l'internationalisation des produits et des services. Localization as a Key Issue of Globalization The economic globalization that characterizes our contemporary societies has led to an encounter between translation and technologies, with the purpose of adapting them to various local environments. Coined early on “localization” within many professional sectors, this initial encounter quickly complexified as it moved to embrace not only the domain of computer software, but markets of all types (finances, medecine, entertainment, etc.), discernibly affecting significant areas of human communication and social organization. This paper seeks to introduce some of the most salient points of this encounter between technologies (particularly the Internet and the ICTs) and translation activities which have become such an important part of the internationalization of products and services.
