Résumé THE FRENCH GENERAL ELECTION 0F 1968 FRANCOIS GOGUEL Le trait le plus caractéristique du premier tour des élections législatives qui est déroulé le 23 juin 1968 est la très forte progression de la majorité sortante tout en ayant entamé l'électorat de gauche de 1967 la majo rité doit le plus gros de ses gains aux suffrages électeurs centristes ou mo dérés 154 sièges dont 144 au profit de U.D.R. ont été pourvus dès ce premier scrutin Une semaine plus tard le scrutin de ballottage confirmé ces tendances certains électeurs de gauche étant en outre dérobés la discipline républicaine Sur le plan géographique on notera tout particu lièrement extension de électorat gaulliste vers le Sud Cette évolution est dans ensemble déterminée par les événements de mai-juin toutefois il semble elle soit antérieure car on peut en déceler des indices tra vers les consultations cantonales inter venues depuis automne 1967 The most characteristic trait of the first ballot of the general election which took place on 23rd fune 1968 is the very great increase in the ma jority if the majority has gained some support from the left wing electorate of 1967 the major part of its gains come from the votes of centrists and moderates 154 seats .144 of which went to the U.D.R. were filled on the first ballot week later the second ballot confirmed this tendency certain left wing electors having furthermore abandoned the Republican disci pline Geographically the extension of the Gaullist electorate towards the South is particularly interesting This evolution was determined on the whole by the events of May and June yet it seems to have its roots further back and to be reflected in the can tonal elections of 1967-1968
