THE ATTITUDE 0F FRANCE PIERRE GERBET et MARIE-ELIZABETH DE BUSSY En 1967 comme en 1963 opposition du gouvernement fran ais est ori gine de échec de la candidature britannique au Marché commun Le général de Gaulle en prenant cette décision est inspiré une certaine conception de la politique européenne Les forces politiques ont pas joué de rôle la majorité suivi le gouverne ment malgré certaines divergences opposition ailleurs divisée rien pu faire Les forces économiques en majorité hostiles adhésion britan nique ont été satisfaites de attitude du gouvernement opinion publique favorable en principe entrée de la Grande-Bretagne été de plus en plus sensible aux inconvénients soulignés dans la thèse officielle Les événements de mai-juin 1968 ne semblent pas avoir modifié les données de la posi tion fran aise égard de la candi dature britannique lu 1967 c/s 1963 it is the opposition oj the French government which is responsible for the failure of Great attempt to enter Europe General de decision is ins pired by certain conception of Europe The political parties have played no role the majority despite some differences of opinion uis fol ioval the government the opposition divided has not been able to do anything Tile economic forces in their majority against the entry of Great Britain are satisfied by the attitude Public opinion favorable to British entry as prin ciple has become more and more appreciative of the inconveniences underlined in the official point of vie The events of May and June 1968 do not seem to have changed French attitudes towards British entry Source : Éditeur (via Persée) |
