ABOUT THE NOTION OF CULTURE IN ANTHROPOLOGY, by PASCAL PERRINEAU
Anthropological science has witnessed the development of a key-concept in the
course of the twentieth century, a concept later adopted and adapted by the
other social sciences : the concept of culture. After declineating the outlines of
the semantic field of the concept of culture such as produced by the scientific
practice of various anthropologists, this concept is going to be studied in several
problematics in which it is directly involved (cultural diversity, contacts of
cultures, cultural coherence). It is then defined in relation to other concepts
in regard to which it stands apart (civilization, progress) or asserts itself by
opposing them (nature, personality).
