L'ÉLECTION LÉGISLATIVE PARTIELLE DES 17 ET 24 SEPTEMBRE 1978 DANS LA PREMIÈRE CIRCONSCRIPTION DE MEURTHE-ET-MOSELLE, par ETIENNE CRIQUI
Le 19 mars 1978, M. Servan-Schreiber est réélu député de la lre circonscription de Meurthe-et-Moselle avec 22 voix d'avance sur son adversaire socialiste, M. Tondon. Trois mois plus tard, le Conseil constitutionnel annule l'élection. Le 24 septembre, enfin, M. Servan-Schreiber est battu de près de 9 000 voix par M. Tondon. La caractéristique du premier tour de scrutin est le renforcement de la bipolarisation autour de MM. Servan-Schreiber et Tondon, au détriment des représentants du RPR et du PC. Le candidat du PS est en progression sensible par rapport au mois de mars (en pourcentage et même en voix). Il gagne des suffrages sur le PC et même sur la majorité, notamment dans les communes ouvrières, ce qui peut s'expliquer par la crise de la sidérurgie. Mais au second tour, l'« éclatante » défaite du député sortant tient plus à l'hostilité d'une partie de la majorité envers M. Servan-Schreiber qu'à « la marée noire du chômage ».

On 1st March 1978, Mr. Servan-Schreiber was reelected as Member of Parliament for the 1st Meurthe-et-Moselle constituency with a lead of 22 votes over his socialist opponent Mr. Tondon. Three months later, the Constitutional Council annulled the election. Finally, on 24th September, Mr. Servan-Schreiber was beaten by Mr. Tondon by almost 9 000 votes. The feature of the first ballot was the increased bipolarisation around Mr. Servan-Schreiber and Mr. Tondon, to the detriment of the RPR and the Communist Party candidates.
