Résumé Pluralism. a conceptual and comparative analysis Luigi Graziano Pluralism is a polymorphous concept still in need of clarification, especially as its underlying philosophy is being exported to a number of post-communist regimes. There are various brands of pluralism and one task for research is to determine some of thé reasons for the success of the American variant. The essay reviews the history of this tradition of thought in a comparative perspective. It deals with its meaning in the European context (Part I) and in the United States (Part II). A brief reference will be mode in Part III to thé distinction between pluralism and neo-corporatism. Part IV will discuss more recent developments, including some critical reactions to « group theory » and the reemergence of the notion of public interest.
