Résumé anglais Remi Clignet and Philip Foster : An example of assimilation : the preeminence of classical studies in the Ivory Coast. The major concern of the study was to indicate some functional consequences of the transfer of a metropolitan system of education to the African context. Findings were based on a 1963 survey of pupils in the examination classes of the different sections and cycles of post-primary education in the Ivory Coast. Gross inequalities in terms of ethnic background, socio-economic status, and geographical origin characterise recruitment patterns into the system as a whole. Fur- ther, differences in social origin as between modern and classical students are paralleled by differential levels of achievement and distinctive variations in their occupational ambitions. The continued adherence to a metropolitan structure of education combined with a heavy emphasis on recruitment by merit is leading to some social correlates observable in France itself. Some tentative judgments are made concerning the relevance of these findings to problems of national unity
