Jean-Pierre Liégeois : The Birth of Gypsy Power.
Gypsies, enclosed in their traditions and in the prejudices constructed around them by those populations among whom they have lived, have always been considered to be incapable of changing. Breaking with this stereotype, gypsy power is organizing on the international scene ; it is serious and has a structure. This is a fundamental change both in gypsy culture and ultimately in the image that others have of it. This article analyzes the social and historical conditions which have permitted this mutation whose outcome will be the recognition of a gypsy personality and culture, in each country as well as on the international scene, or their sure decline.
