Philippe Besnard : Merton à la recherche de l'anomie.
L'objet principal de cet article est de mettre en évidence les difficultés et équivoques fondamentales de la « théorie mertonienne de l'anomie » qui n'ont pas été aperçues par ses multiples utilisateurs et commentateurs. La confrontation détaillée des différents textes où Merton a développé cette théorie permet de repérer les glissements et inflexions de l'analyse et révèle son incohérence et son inachèvement. Elle montre, en particulier, que la notion d'anomie est, chez Merton, à la fois incertaine et inutile. Cependant, l'usage mertonien du terme, renvoyant à la limitation des moyens, a contribué à conférer à la notion d'anomie une signification opposée au concept durkheimien qui désignait l'indétermination des fins. Philippe Besnard : Merton in search of anomie.
The main purpose of this article is to bring out the basic difficulties and ambiguities in the "Mertonian Theory of Anomie," difficulties which have not been perceived by its many users and commentators. A detailed comparison of the different texts in which Merton worked out his theory allows the reader to perceive the shifts and inflections in the analysis and shows its inconsistency and incompleteness. It especially shows that in the Mertonian analysis the concept of anomie is both uncertain and without application. However, the Mertonian use of the term in reference to a limitation of means has been a factor in the application to the notion of anomie of an opposite meaning to the Durkheimian concept, which spoke of an indeterminacy of ends.
