La première partie de l'article prend nettement position en faveur de l'évolutionnisme en anthropologie sociale, réfute quelques-uns des faux raisonnements qui ont été allégués à son encontre et dénonce les préjugés anti-évolutionnistes les plus tenaces. La seconde partie examine l'ethnologie évolutionniste du XIXe siècle, souligne la différence fondamentale entre deux attitudes théoriques illustrées par Tylor et Morgan et propose enfin les éléments d'une critique conduite en de tout autres termes que celle qui a cours dans la discipline. Alain Testart : The role of evolutionism in social anthropology.
The first part of this article is in favor of the role evolutionism plays in social anthropology and disproves some of the false arguments laid down against this role and criticizes the most persistent forms of anti-evolutionist prejudice. The second part of the article takes a look at evolutionist ethnology in the XIXth century, pointing out the fundamental difference between two theoretical stands illustrated by Tylor and Morgan, finally presenting the elements of an appreciation handled in terms resulting in an appreciation quite different to that currently applied in this field.
