Née à la fin des années 1960, la Nouvelle Droite s'est attachée depuis les années 1980 à stigmatiser la société de consommation. Au cœur de ses critiques, on trouve les conséquences écologiques du développement, l'aliénation provoquée par la consommation ou la « mercantilisation » de la culture, indissociable de la dénonciation de l'américanisation des sociétés ou de la menace d'une uniformisation/indifférenciation. À l'inverse, face à la « dictature du marché », il s'agirait de défendre « la cause des peuples ». Cet objectif néodroitier est inséparable d'une volonté de recherche d'une troisième voie anticonsumériste, qui conduit la Nouvelle Droite à agréger à sa démarche des auteurs et des groupements éloignés d'elle. Au-delà des polémiques issues de la prétendue existence d'un « complot rouge-brun », force est de constater, qu'à l'instar de bien des tentatives nées dans les années 1930, cette nouvelle recherche d'une troisième voie est un échec. Born in the 1960s, the New Right's aim since the 1980s has been to stigmatize the consumer society. At the heart of its criticism, there are the ecological consequences of development, the alienation provoked by consumption or “mercantilization” of culture, indissociable from the denunciation of the Americanization of societies or from the threat of an standardization /un-differentiation. Conversely, faced with the “market's dictatorship”, it would defend the “people's cause”. This neoright aim is inseparable from an attempt to search for an anti-consumerist third way that makes the New Right incorporate authors and groups that are not close to it to its approach. Beyond the debates about the so-called existence of a “red-brown plot”, it has to be admitted that like the other attempts born in the 1930s, this new search for a third way failed.
