	Résumé	René Cheval (1918-1986), itinéraire d'un médiateur franco-allemandJeune agrégé d'allemand, René Cheval fut nommé en 1945 curateur de l'Université de Tübingen, une tâche double qui comprenait la dénazification des personnels mais aussi l'initiation des premiers échanges universitaires franco-allemands après guerre. Il poursuivit sa carrière dans la diplomatie culturelle jusqu'au poste stratégique de conseiller culturel à l'ambassade de France à Bonn entre 1966 et 1973. Son parcours entre la France et l'Allemagne de 1945 à 1973 permet d'aborder l'évolution des relations culturelles franco-allemandes avant aussi bien qu'après la signature du traité de l'Élysée en 1963. Il s'agit aussi de voir dans cet article comment un germaniste au service de la diplomatie française a pu jouer un rôle de médiateur franco-allemand aux différents postes qu'il a occupés. 	Résumé anglais	René Cheval (1918-1986), itinéraire d'un médiateur franco-allemand In 1945, as a young professor of German linguistics, René Cheval was appointed Administrator of the University of Tübingen, a double task which included both the denazification of the staff and the beginning of the first Franco-German university exchanges in the post-war period. He continued his career in cultural diplomacy until he was appointed Cultural Adviser to the French Embassy in Bonn between 1966 and 1973. Through the analysis of his career from 1945 to 1973, we can approach the evolution of Franco-German cultural relations both before and after the signature of the Treaty of the Élysée in 1963. The article also illustrates to what extent a Germanist, serving French diplomacy through his various positions, could carry out a role of mediator between France and Germany.
