| Résumé anglais | SPELLING CONTROVERSY IN THE 17TH CENTURY The recent propositions for the « rectification of French spelling » provoked such violent reactions that they recall the controversy in the 17th century against the modernization of French. On the background of quarrel between Ancients and Moderns, with a curious amalgam in the terms between the reform of spelling and the Reform of religion, we can see the fear that changes in spelling could overturn social order. | |
