Résumé anglais H. Brunschwig — ~~Vigne d'Octon and Anticolonialism under the Third French Republic, 1871-1914.~~ Is Vigne d'Octon, sometime medical officer in the Marine Corps, then a député in the French Parliament, to be considered a pioneer of doctrinary anti-colonialism? The answer seems to be in the negative, despite the fact that, both in his published works (especially his novels) and some of his parliamentary interventions, he attacked the authorities committed in contemporary colonial military campaigns. He certainly was an anti-militarist and opposed further colonial expansion, yet he did not refuse the very principle of colonization. His general attitude was not, in fact, significantly different from that of contemporary moderate left-wing politicians.
