| Résumé | Au milieu des années 1980, tandis que le « miracle ivoirien » s'estompait, le combat du prophète Gbahié Koudou Jeannot contre ce qu'il appelait « le fétichisme et la sorcellerie » rencontra une très large adhésion et eut un grand retentissement national. Bien qu'on puisse la considérer comme un nouvel avatar d'un phénomène prophétique qui n'a jamais cessé de hanter l'histoire de la Côte-d'lvoire, la geste de Gbahié Koudou force le commentaire sous deux aspects essentiels. D'un côté, elle rappelle l'épopée de W. W. Harris qui, de 1913 à 1915, mena un combat similaire et fut au départ des prophétismes ivoiriens, indiquant ainsi qu'à soixante-dix ans de distance, et malgré l'ampleur des changements, l'histoire du pays se répétait singulièrement. Mais, de l'autre, elle s'inscrit profondément dans son époque en en révélant les principales contradictions et, mieux encore, en anticipant la crise socio-politique du tournant des années 1990 qui ébranlera le règne d'Houphouët-Boigny et provoquera le retour au multipartisme. | |
| Résumé anglais | Gbahié Koudou Jeannot. A Prophet Foretelling the Crisis. — In the mid-1980s, as the &ampquot;Ivory miracle&ampquot; was wearing out, Prophet Gbahié Koudou Jeannot's struggle against &ampquot;witchcraft and fetishism&ampquot; attracted many followers and had national repercussions. Even though this can be considered to be a repetition of prophetie phenomena in the history of the Ivory Coast, Jeannot's actions calls for comment for two reasons. For one thing, they bring to mind the epic of the forefather of Ivory Coast prophets, W. W. Harris who, from 1913 to 1915, led a similar fight. This provides evidence that—60 years later and despite major changes in the mean-time—the country's history has amazingly repeated. Secondly, Jeannot's actions fit into the times: they reveal major contradictions and foretell the social, political crisis of the early 1990s, which destabilized Houphouet-Boigny's government and brought back a multiparty system. | |
