| Résumé | Cet article décrit les traits généraux de l'histoire précoloniale de la diaspora marchande Idaw al-Hajj, un groupe qui est lié à la fois au royaume wolof du nord-ouest du Sénégal at au monde arabo-berbère du Sahara occidental. Les Idaw al-Hajj ont exercé une large hégémonie commerciale au cours de la période comprise entre la fin du XVIIe siècle et le boom de la gomme au début du XIXe siècle. Au fil du temps, les Blanc Idaw al-Hajj du nord-ouest du Sénégal se sont pleinement intégrés au sein du monde wolof. L'histoire des Idaw al-Hajj nous révèle que l'identité ethnique, qu'il s'agisse des Arabo-berbères blancs ou des Wolof noirs, est d'ordre contextuel et qu'elle est sujette à transformation en fonction des conjonctions historiques. | |
| Résumé anglais | This article constructs the general outlines of the precolonial history of the Idaw al-Hajj commercial diaspora, a grouping which linked the Black African Wolof states of northwestern Senegal with the Arabo-Berber world of the western Sahara. The Idaw al-Hajj maintained a broad commercial hegemony from the late seventeenth century until the gum boom of early nineteenth century. Over time, the 'White' Idaw al-Hajj of northwestern Senegal fully integrated them-selves culturally into the Wolof world. The history of the Idaw al-Hajj demonstrates that the ethnie identities of both 'White' Arabo-Berbers and 'Black' Wolof were contextual and subject to transformation as a resuit of changing historical circumstance. | |
