L'approche des coutumes sociales suppose que les syndicats offrent à leurs membres une réputation de bonnes valeurs sociétales (1984). Dès lors, l'adhésion est une fonction croissante de cette réputation. Les cadres institutionnels influent-ils sur les choix d'adhésion ? Quel est l'impact des caractéristiques individuelles dans la détermination du choix d'adhésion ? Les individus ayant des caractéristiques identiques auront-ils le même comportement à l'égard du syndicalisme ? Dans ce papier, nous adoptons une approche économétrique dans l'analyse des facteurs susceptibles d'orienter le choix d'adhésion. L'article propose une étude empirique des déterminants de l'adhésion syndicale en centrant l'éclairage sur l'impact des caractéristiques individuelles et des facteurs institutionnels. Pour cela plusieurs spécifications économétriques sont proposées portant les unes sur des données agrégées panelisées (pays-années) les autres sur des données individuelles de l'European Social Survey couvrant 23 pays. Social custom approach supposes that the trade unions offer to their members a reputation of good societal values (Booth, 1984). Consequently, trade union membership is an increasing function of this reputation. Do the institutional frameworks influence the choices of adhesion? Which is the impact of the individual characteristics in the determination of the choice of adhesion? Will the individuals having identical characteristics have the same behaviour with regard to unionism? In this paper, we adopt an econometric approach in the analysis of the factors likely to direct the choice of adhesion. This paper, proposes an empirical study of determinants of union membership by centring lighting on the impact of the individual characteristics and the institutional factors. For that several econometric specifications are proposed carrying the ones on panelised aggregate data (country-years) the others on individual data of European Social Survey covering 23 countries.
