Le 9 mai 1978, dans le village sicilien de Cinisi, un cadavre déchiqueté par une explosion est retrouvé à proximité de la gare. La police accrédite la thèse d'un attentat suicide, perpétré par un militant antimafia, représentant local d'un parti d'extrême gauche : Giuseppe Impastato. Cette thèse, qui laisse planer sur la victime l'accusation de terrorisme, sera renversée au cours d'une « affaire » se prolongeant jusqu'en 2002. Au terme de ce quart de siècle, deux mafieux sont jugés comme coupables du meurtre, en même temps que la mafia est qualifiée d'association « terroriste ». Cet article analyse les conditions de ce retournement impliquant une mutation de perception non seulement vis-à-vis du mouvement antimafia, initialement disqualifié comme subversif avant d'être réhabilité et institutionnalisé, mais aussi de l'État italien qui, confronté à l'épreuve de la mafia, acquiert une légitimité nouvelle. On May 9, 1978, in the Sicilian village of Cinisi, a cadaver torn apart by an explosion is found next to the railway station. Police officials support the theory of a suicide bombing perpetrated by an anti-Mafia activist and local representative of a party of the extreme left : Giuseppe Impastato. This view, which shows the victim as being the “terrorist” itself, will be upturned during a long process lasting until 2002 and mixing public mobilization and juridical procedures. Finally, at the end of this process of a quarter of a century, two mafiosi are judged guilty of the murder, while the Mafia as a whole simultaneously appeared more and more as a form of “terrorism”. The article analyzes the conditions of this reversal involving the transformation of the perception not only of the anti-Mafia movement, initially disqualified as subversive and then rehabilitated and even institutionalized, but also of the Italian state which, put to the test of the Mafia, acquired a new legitimacy.
