L'auteur s'interroge sur l'effet produit sur les combattants non par la violence paroxystique ponctuelle mais par la durée, sans terme prévisible, de la guerre. Pour lui, résignation, pragmatisme, capacité d'oubli momentané ont été les réactions les plus communes pour essayer de surmonter l'incapacité à se projeter dans l'avenir — cette dernière étant provoquée par leur perception de la forte probabilité de leur disparition tout au long de ce conflit sans fin. The author does not examine the consequences of the punctual extreme violence on the combatants but rather the effect that had on them the duration, with no foreseeable end, of the war. According to him, pragmatism and capacity of momentary oblivion have been the most common reactions in trying to get over the inability to engage in the future, an inability that was provoked by the high probability of them disappearing during this endless conflict.
