L'histoire des rapports entre France et Afrique aux époques coloniale et postcoloniale montre que ceux-ci ont toujours été ambigus : les élites, notamment, étaient certes critiques vis-à- vis du colonialisme, mais défendaient l'assimilation à la française. Mais un changement apparaît au moment où l'immigration venant d'Afrique est stoppée. The history of the relationship between France and Africa during the colonial and postcolonial periods demonstrates permanent ambiguity: the elites in particular, though adopting as a matter of course a critical attitude towards colonialism, at the same time supported the French model of assimilation. Changes occurred when immigration from Africa was stopped.
