La loi du 23 février 2005 imposant à l'Université et aux programmes scolaires de reconnaître « le rôle positif de la présence française outre-mer » a suscité de nombreuses oppositions. Elle a envenimé un peu plus les débats concernant les retombées du passé colonial de la France que les pétitionnaires du texte « Nous sommes les indigènes de la République ! » lient aux discriminations. The Law of 23rd February : colonisation, natives, victimization The Law of the 23rd February 2005 which imposed upon University and school curricula the obligation to recognize the « positive role of the French presence » in the « France d'outre-mer » provoked strong opposition. It has further poisoned the already impassioned debates concerning the consequences of France's colonial history which the authors of the petition « We are the Indigenes of the Republic ! » link to present discrimination.
