L'article examine le rôle des organismes de normalisation comme moteurs de l'innovation. Il étudie l'émergence et l'évolution du sms. L'analyse empirique précise les informations recueillies auprès d'une série d'entrevues réalisées avec les membres des comités de normalisation en charge des services non-voix dans le système mondial de communications mobiles (gsm), et du procès-verbal des réunions où le développement du sms a été discuté. L'objectif est de comprendre les caractéristiques du processus d'invention coopérative qui sous-tend le développement d'un des rares succès commerciaux entre les services non-voix de télécommunication mobile, afin d'évaluer l'importance des organismes de normalisation comme moteurs de l'innovation. The paper investigates the role of standard organizations as engines of innovation examining the emergence and evolution of the short message service (sms). The empirical analysis elaborates the information collected from a series of interviews carried out with members of the standard committees in charge of non-voice services in the global system for mobile communications (gsm) environment, and from the minutes of the meetings where sms development was discussed. The goal is to understand the characteristics of the process of cooperative invention underpinning the development of one of the few commercially successful, non-voice mobile telecom services, in order to evaluate the importance of standard organizations as engines of innovations.
