À partir des écrits laissés par des administrations locales, cette étude interroge certaines notions anciennes (« bon gouvernement » de la cité, « bon magistrat ») afin d'appréhender les discours d'auto-représentation d'autorités révolutionnaires qui, dans leur quête de légitimité, cherchent à désarmer les oppositions. La représentation de l'administrateur dévoué dévoile les antagonismes et contradictions à l'œuvre parmi les révolutionnaires sur la place à accorder au peuple, dans une France bouleversée par les sacrifices nécessaires à l'effort de guerre. En l'an II, l'exaltation du « bon magistrat » répond à un idéal de République fondée sur des relations d'interdépendance entre les citoyens, à partir du don de soi, engagement patriotique et fraternel, afin de réaliser une démocratie où seraient respectées la Liberté et l'Égalité. Using the writings of local administrations, this article investigates certain time-honored notions (« good government » of the city and the « good magistrates) to understand the discourse of self-representation of revolutionary authorities who, in their quest for legitimacy, sought to appease their opponents. The representation of the devoted administrator reveals the conflicts and contradictions among the revolutionaries over the issue of the place to accord to the « people » in a France disordered by the sacrifices necessary for the war effort. In the Year II, the exaltation of the « good magistrate » corresponded to the ideal of a Republic founded on the interdependence of citizens, beginning with the notions of self sacrifice, and political as well as fraternal commitments, aimed at achieving a democracy where liberty and equality would be respected.
