La polémique autour de l'ouvrage relance le scandale provoqué un an auparavant par la leçon inaugurale faite par Renan, en 1862, au Collège de France. En masquant le propos fondamental du livre, cette controverse est à l'origine d'un malentendu lourd de conséquence. Elle débouche sur un jugement erroné de l'œuvre de Renan rangé au rang d'écrivain à succès mais finalement de dilettante. En faisant silence sur l'entreprise scientifique qu'elle recouvre, elle condamne définitivement la possibilité de fonder en France l'histoire des religions comme discipline reconnue à l'Université. The debate around this book recalls a double scandal: first, on the occasion of the inaugural lesson given by Renan at the College de France in 1862, and then through the debate following the publication of the book one year later. In hiding the fundamental purpose of the book, this controversy has been responsible for a misunderstanding fraught with consequences. It has promoted a judgement on Renan as being a successful writer but, ultimately, a dilettante. By concealing the scientific nature of the work, it has since prevented the possibility of founding the history of religions in France as a discipline acknowledged by the University.
