De la fin de la guerre d'Éthiopie en mai 1936 jusqu'à l'automne 1938, les relations franco-italiennes, qui s'étaient largement améliorées après les accords de Rome de janvier 1935, se dégradent. Les choix diplomatiques du Front populaire, la non-reconnaissance par la France du nouvel Empire d'Italie, la guerre d'Espagne et le rapprochement italo-allemand rendent les conversations officielles de plus en plus rares tandis que les crises internationales qui se multiplient accroissent les divergences. Le thème de la « latinité », longtemps utilisé dans les deux pays pour légitimer une entente, ne séduit plus. Grâce aux efforts des organisations favorables à une réconciliation, le contact n'est jamais rompu mais la hantise de la rupture est bien présente durant une période où la destruction de l'amitié franco-italienne favorise le basculement des alliances. « Latin » friends and diplomatic pragmatism. Franco-Italian relations from 1936 to 1938Between the ending of the Ital-Ethiopian War in May 1936 and the autumn of 1938, Franco-Italian relations, which had greatly improved after the Rome agreements of January 1935, deteriorated. The diplomatic choices of the Popular Front, France's refusal to recognise the newly created Italian Empire, the Spanish Civil War and the German-Italian rapprochement made official talks increasingly rare. At the same time, the growing number of international crises increased differences. The concept of a shared « latin identity », used for a long time by both countries to justify an alliance, was no longer appealing. Thanks to the efforts of organisations in favour of reconciliation between the two countries, contact was never broken off. However the obsessive fear of a breakdown in relations remained ever-present during a period when the collapse of the Franco-Italian friendship favoured a change in alliances.
