L'intérêt que Tennyson porta, sa vie durant, à la science se reflète dans deux de ses poèmes majeurs : In Memoriam et The Princess. L'intertexte scientifique, loin d'apporter un réconfort durable au locuteur endeuillé d'In Memoriam, se révèle au contraire suffisamment fluctuant pour traduire son humeur noire et participer ainsi à la relance mélancolique de son discours. Dans The Princess, la voix narrative tourne en dérision le discours évolutionniste de l'héroïne, s'ingéniant ainsi à en montrer les limites et les contradictions. Dans les deux cas, l'image d'une mère nature « dénaturée » fait jouer le texte et émerger la figure d'un enfant perdu qui hante l'écriture. Si l'« infant » est une métaphore de l'œuvre tout entière, ce motif s'avère doublement fécond, pointant tout à la fois vers les interstices du texte où cherche à monter une autre voix poétique. Throughout his life, Lord Alfred Tennyson showed great interest for science, which can be traced in two major poems: In Memoriam and The Princess. Far from providing the speaker of In Memoriam with lasting comfort, scientific discourse proves ambivalent enough to echo his mourning voice, thus contributing to the melancholy flow. In The Princess the playful narrative voice mocks the evolutionist stance of the main feminine character and shows its limits and inner contradictions. In both poems, the image of a monstrous mother nature goes together with the recurring figure of a lost child. The “infant” may be a metaphor for Tennyson's whole poetical work, but it also discloses some secret place behind the words where another poetical voice endeavours to make itself heard.
