La Bibliothèque de l'Hôtel de Ville (auparavant dénommée Bibliothèque administrative de la Ville de Paris) est une bibliothèque de conservation et de recherche ouverte au public et constitue le service central de documentation de la Mairie de Paris. Elle a remplacé la bibliothèque détruite dans l'incendie de l'Hôtel de Ville de 1871. The Bibliothèque de l'Hôtel de Ville (previously known under the name of Bibliothèque administrative de la Ville de Paris) is a patrimonial and research library, open free to the public, and is also the main documentation centre of the municipal government of Paris. It has succeeded the library that disappeared in the fire of the Hôtel de Ville, May 24th, 1871. The reading room, listed on the historical register, offers one of the best examples of library architecture of the end of the 19th century. The library holds 600 000 printed books, manuscripts, architecture drawings and photographs. The collections, gathered since the origin on a very large basis, are more particularly focused on social sciences, law, contemporary history, and Parisian documentation. They make the library an essential place for researches on the 19th and 20th centuries. One of the most original resources of the library is its foreign collection (about 50 000 volumes), fruits of the international exchanges maintained by the city of Paris from 1870 to 1920 with a great number of local and central governments all over the world.
