Si la présence des marins de Gaète le long des côtes tyrrhéniennes romaines n'était pas un phénomène nouveau au XVIIIe siècle, elle prit un relief particulier dans le cadre de Ripa Grande. Dans un contexte de création et d'affirmation d'une identité ‘étatique', l'insertion initiale des Gaetani par l'intermédiaire de l'appareil normatif réglant la pêche pontificale concrétisait la patiente accumulation de savoirs informels et la construction d'un réseau d'intermédiaires stratégiquement positionnés. Although the presence of Gaeta's seamen on the roman Tyrrhenian coast was not exactly a new phenomenon in the 18th century, Ripa Grande favoured a major increase of such presence. In a context of creation and assertion of a State identity, the initial insertion of the Gaetani by the means of the normative apparatus regulating papal fishing gave concrete expression to the slow accumulation of informal skills and the development of a network of strategically placed go-betweens.
