Using folklore for information education: analysis of ways of using the Internet on the “electronic frontier"Starting with an analysis of documents that appear, at least in theory, to be didactic - guides, FAQ and other "how to" guides to the Internet aimed at users before we had the Web - our author shows how their informational strategy was based as much on transmitting as on mediating information retrieval methods in a networked environment, before Web tools became generally accessible. Sharing rules for using information transmitted by text, these methods also allow for multiple interpretations as well as pragmatic application. This documentary and content-based analysis helps us understand just how much these methods depend on a complex informational environment that in turn they help us to grasp, and how they set the basis for Internet-specific informational literacy.
