Résumé anglais Since independence more frequently consists in highly symbolical and self-promoting gesturing than in economic reality, when the concept of “films du milieu” was coined in France in 2007, it was bound to be attractive, as these mid-budget films reconciled artistic requirements with the pleasure of entertainment. Yet, even though, statistically speaking, there is no evidence that the budget for film distribution has thus been structurally modified in France, one might wonder whether it is possible to equate a budget category with artistic quality. This article aims at showing how, in the past thirty years, the total dependence of French and European film production on funding provided by television companies has deeply modified the films' characteristics, not only in terms of length and format, but also in terms of genre. Comparing the situation of the French film industry with that of the globally predominant Hollywood, which continues to finance films with movie theaters grosses (thus catering for its own spectators), reveals the weaknesses of French films, which are economically dependent on television for their funding, and hence primarily made for this media.
